Overview

Inside The Book

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE to start over or to step out of a bad situation or into a whole new world of opportunity. The global pandemic has caused many people to re-evaluate careers, family situations, states of health, and financial stability and freedom. Many have lost everything, and many people across the world are rebuilding. And it is a good time to do something better or different. I believe strongly that the women of Africa have the opportunity to expand, build more profitable businesses, take on a side gig, or take their passion project full-time. It is a time for renewal and to resonate in abundance even though around us may be scarcity and uncertainty.

If we have learned anything during 2020 it is that sometimes you need a way out, or a Plan B. Spend some time with a business professional and refine that great idea, take a chance on something or someone, there are no guarantees. All you can do is plan well, work hard, stay focused, keep learning, and never quit. We are only limited to the extent of our thoughts and visions. Abundance is also cultivating a sense of freedom, not worrying about how things are, but taking steps to get where you want to be. There are more than enough resources on the planet; what is needed is for people to have integrity and purpose around what they can be used for.

Instead, most people are fearful of not having enough. They fear for the present and they fear for the future, both of which completely obliterate any chance of bounty flowing into their life. The secret to living your passion and making a living out of it is about allowing. Often, we want or work towards something, but our deepest beliefs repel the very thing we are asking God for. After the request comes the allowing. If what you desire is bringing something positive to the world, then it will come to bless the lives of others.

This is so evident when you compare people who, without passion for what they do, only wait for a weekly or monthly payday, and those who work all hours of the day, losing track of time immersed in the very thing that makes them feel alive. If you can get to the point where that place of flow also becomes your source of income then you have won first prize, but it comes down to the decisions that we take, and the actions that follow. You have to take the leap of faith and in my experience, you might even surprise yourself. Zig Ziglar said it well: "you don't have to be great at something to start, but you have to start to be great."

In Abundance And Renewal, You Will Learn

The face and scope of careers and businesses are evolving and there are thousands of ways to live a fuller life. Perhaps it starts with untangling self-limiting beliefs about success, value, deservingness, or abundance, or it can be as practical as seeking expert advice on how to be successful or getting help with reengineering a business process. It may be that they need an emergency fund or a backup plan, and every little bit helps, but ultimately, it all starts with reflection and a decision to grow and renew.

For us it was pretty common to come from school and still in our uniform go and help out at the shop until closing time. By the age of 14, we were thoroughly engrossed and well versed with business activities. We would be sent to the bank. That's how I found myself going to Barclays Bank quite often. Somewhere during those errands, I began admiring the tellers and bank managers and thinking to myself that it would be nice to work in a bank someday.

During that time, all I wanted to do was just allow the depression to set in fully, allowing me to crumble because in overwhelm, I wouldn’t have to feel, or figure anything out. But every day I would see the children and I would remind myself to persevere and keep going.

My career highlights and achievements include contributions as a member of the Barclays talent team. I also led and coordinated cost rationalization programs with over $1.3 million in savings through implementing process efficiencies. I was the product lead for the current award-winning mobile banking app and the internet banking platform at Credit Bank.

I'm passionate about finance, but having seen the devastating effects of not having enough, I am even more passionate about women like myself having abundance and financial freedom. In 2013, when I made the choice to downsize and rebuild, it brought on serious emotional and financial repercussions. But it had to be done.

Women in Africa need to believe in and pursue financial freedom. Whether through an exciting new business venture, exploring sources of passive income, or just getting the mind-set right about deservingness and thinking beyond parental narratives of frugality, struggle, too far-off rainy days, and lack.

  • List down 5 talents/gifts that you possess.
  • Write down areas of interest that you read/research often.
  • Write down the things people have said you are good at, or approach you for.

Find mentors and role-models and start building networks and associating with people who are already where you want to be, or who will at least not become and obstacle on your path. I have been blessed with the most amazing mentors and supporters who have helped me to step out and achieve, and now to pay it forward.

  • Identify what you’re good at that can help you achieve your goals
  • Identify people who are willing to pay for what you are good at (this can be a job or business)
  • Identify people who are experts in your field that you can learn from
  • Determine what you need to do to begin actualizing your goal

The starting point would be discovering your passion and how to tie it to a problem you can solve or value you can add to other people’s lives. The next would be knowing how best to define your product or service-offering. This should be followed by market research and testing viability for your product or service. After this is done, create a business plan. Think about your sources of capital.
